2021.10.26 08:00 throwawayrelationshp Move from single host to managed services or a replication setup

I am running a small business with a few low traffic websites, python & node backends and an ERP. Right now, everything is hosted on one VPS (Hetzner) with daily backups. My main concern is losing data during the day and longer downtimes. We have:
- ERPNext running on docker with MariaDB. Must use MariaDB. This is the most critical part in terms of availability and safety. - A few Gatsby sites that build on Gatsby Cloud. Recently moved hosting to netlify for easy deployment. - A Python/Django backend running in docker using a Postgres DB. Will probably disappear in the future. - A node.js backend running in docker using a redis server to cache requests to ERPNext.
Right now I see two options:

  1. Set up a second server in another region, set up docker swarm (kubernetes?!) and replication for the databases with a floating ip failover. I would need some time to figure this out, as I haven't done that before.
  2. Move everything to managed services. I guess DigitalOcean would offer everything we need. Managed databases and running the services. Might move the node.js backend to firebase and replace redis with their DB.
If it weren't for the costs I'd move to managed services in an instant and have easy of mind. Especially with the database. However, Hetzner is cheap and we are located in Germany. I don't mind spending a few hours a month to take care of stuff but I am not an expert and I wonder if this approach is future proof when we grow.

2021.10.26 08:00 TooTurntRose The lasting impact of a negative working environment

I got my first job when I was 16. I worked in a sports and fashion store here in Ireland. The store was one of about 40 around the country. My pay was €6.15 an hour, I was too young and had no experience to argue the case or try and get a better wage. My time in the store was awful, I have never felt humiliation or experienced anxiety like it.
There were three instances that live in my memory, which define my time working there.
1: When the store started selling protein powders and bars we had to do a training session on how to sell them, four stores came together to do the training. Altogether there were about 50 people there. Once the training had started, my manager told me to come up and stand beside her. So I did and she then laughed at me and my body saying "this skinny little lad is the kind of person we need to be selling protein to". She poked my arms and stomach and everyone laughed at me. This became a joke around the management then and I was made fun of every day for how I looked. I began trying to cover myself up but this only encourage them to mock me.
2: At the staff Christmas party I was standing talking to some of my coworkers. A manager came over, very drunk and start chatting away to us. I was joking around with one of the coworkers and my manager misheard something I said. She then proceeded to grab me by the neck and shout in my face that I was to go stand outside. I was terrified, I tried explaining she misheard me but she was drunk and refused to listen. She pushed me towards the door until I was standing outside in the rain. I was not allowed back in and had to walk home.
3: I was terribly anxious working in the store and I used to play with the lanyard which hung around my neck. One afternoon my supervisor walked over, punched me in the chest and said "stop playing with that fucking lanyard". She said she would punch me whenever she saw me playing with it, and she did. I was punched three more times.
People often ask me why I didn't just leave the job but I needed the money and the experience. I couldn't get any other job and I had to save for college. I felt like a slave to that job. I wanted nothing more than to leave but I really did not have much of a choice but to stay.
I ended up quitting after 8 months working there. I could not take it anymore. The abuse and humiliation had overwhelmed me and I was miserable. I was crippled with anxiety every day going to work and when I got home I would go to bed and cry. I was depressed, horribly depressed.
The point I want to make with this whole long post is that bad work environments can destroy you. They can suck the life from you and leave you with a lasting negative feeling towards work. Not every job will be bad but it is so hard to see that when you are suffering in a hellish job. I was afraid to start another job for months after that. When I finally did start a new job I was so scared of the same things happening. I felt afraid of work and the management. Luckily, my second job was the exact opposite of the first. The management and staff were so kind and helpful. However, it took me months to feel comfortable working there. I carried the emotional baggage into this new job and let the horrible past experiences weigh me down.
No job is worth destroying your mental health. This page while often funny and entertaining is an invaluable resource for helping those taking their first steps into the professional world. This subreddit reminds us all that we are people not just employees and our lives are more than just a job.
