2021.10.26 08:02 throwawayreddit-acad Helping others without getting acknowledged
I am a PhD candidate from a US university and my research is predominantly in biosciences. I am in the advanced stages of my PhD and I have gained experience in certain experimental and theoretical techniques which are not easily transferrable. As a result, I often get approached by people who are interested in using the experimental technique which has resulted in successful collaborations with other labs and they have always offered to make a a co-author on their papers. My experience of working with people from other labs has been great so far.
However, story has been a bit different when it comes to collaborating with the people from my own lab. I have helped people design some experiments, discuss the theoretical aspects, devoted time doing experiments and also teaching them how to do those experiments to some extent so that they can be self sufficient to some degree while I focus on my own research. But for the last two such instances, I haven’t got any credit for it (not even in the acknowledgment sections of their papers). Now I have been again approached for help with the same experiments a third time and I am wondering how should I approach the situation so that I do not end up devoting too much time on something that might not lead to any returns, especially during the crucial tail end of my PhD. I wanted to get the opinion of the community on the following questions:
1) Are these “goodwill gestures” common in academic life and, should I just take it easy and be a good team player, not worrying about returns?
2) Should I be forward and approach my advisor? Would it make me look like not being collaborative enough (potentially risking future collaborations with my own advisor and others)
3) Should I just avoid collaborating with them, since they have not acknowledged me previously in their work? And if so, how should I say no to them.
I am concerned about what repercussions my decision might have for plan of pursuing an academic career. I also hope that this is not just some non-issue and I am not just being immature about it.

My father in law bought our 9 month old son this [sheep comforter](Daisy The Irish Sheep Baby Comforter with Shamrock Design Cream Colour https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07Z5476V6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_E1P4CT56KTY1JXZSDVDX) during his travels in Ireland. Our son LOVES it and we are trying to find a replacement or two, just in case something happens to Lambie but we cannot seem to find it online anywhere. Some results pop up ok but lead to dead ends.
We are based in Australia so it’s a little hard to look ourselves :) hoping anyone out there can help. Our son is called Cian, if that helps the Irish connection :)

Study finds that the justifications for excluding women from research participation in part due to the assumption that ovarian hormone fluctuations lead to variation, especially in emotion, was misguided.

Is there a sadety reason that the F1 pit crew wear helmets for the pit stop, or is it just esthetic ?
Wondering that 'cause seeing the different design that there are (between ferrari and alpine for example), I don't see the efficiency about alpine's helmet over a more 'common', like ferrari's one for example.

2021.10.26 08:02 FFBot Official: [Tuesday Waiver Wire] - Tue Morning, 10/26/2021
Tuesday Waiver Wire Thread Waiver Wires are where leagues are won
This thread is for people to post about who they are targeting on the waiver wire, ask others if it’s worth burning their waiver for a player, discuss what they are bidding for someone if they use FAAB, and because waivers clear overnight and the next day's theme thread is not posted until the next morning - you should also use this thread to talk about who you managed to get or just missed out on once your waivers process.
If you're posting specifics and looking for feedback please be sure to post what waiver you're using, league size, and how your waivers work (weekly reset, weekly inverse standing, rolling list, etc) For people in FAAB leagues, please post how much you're bidding on the player and remember that you should post the bid amount as a percentage of your initial budget OR post both the bid amount and the initial budget so everyone can see the percentage you're spending. Telling us you're bidding $73 on someone doesn't help much if your FAAB budget is $1000 and everyone else is playing with a $200 budget.
If you'd like to discuss something outside of this theme, please try checking the latest Daily INDEX for a thread that might be more suitable for you. If you still don't find what you're looking for, search new before posting your own thread, and as always please follow the subreddit's Rules and Guidelines in all your activity.

2021.10.26 08:02 Professional-Deal406 Why does my Gas oven use 300+ Watts when heating?
I have a relatively new (2 years) 5 burner Samsung gas convection oven/range. I am looking to use one in a location that is highly constrained in terms of electricity usage so I want to make sure the consumption isn't very high. To that end I bought a "Kill a Watt" tool that measures electricity consumption. I plugged it in and got the readings I expected, .7 Watts continuous load for the clock and an additional 40 W for the light when I open the door. However, when I turn on the oven (without the convection) the usage spikes to over 300 Watts and stays there until the oven hits the desired temp. Then, when it cools and the oven heat cycles, the usage spikes back up to 300+ watts. My question is, What is the electricity possibly being used for? The pilot light is lit, at MOST, it should be checking the temperature which should require almost no electricity. An electric oven is only using 1,000 Watts. Why am I using 30%+ of that with gas?
